The principle

Not just how old you are. But how fast you are ageing.

microRNAs are small RNA molecules that regulate how strongly individual genes are read. Three of them — miR-21, miR-24 and miR-155 — stand for inflammation, cellular ageing and metabolism. A regression model uses their interplay to calculate a biological age and sets it against chronological age. Because microRNAs respond dynamically, changes can show up comparatively quickly.

Three signals

miR-21 (inflammation), miR-24 (senescence and repair) and miR-155 (immune balance and metabolism).

Dynamic

microRNA levels change with diet, exercise, sleep, stress and smoking.

Trend-oriented

What carries meaning is the development between two measurements under the same conditions — not the single value.

The process

  1. 01

    Measure

Dried blood spot card, from the fingertip. microRNA expression by qPCR, normalised against miR-93. No fasting required.

  2. 02

    Interpret

A multivariate regression model uses the three signals to calculate the biological age and its deviation from chronological age.

  3. 03

    Change

Specific nutrition and lifestyle levers for each signal, plus follow-up monitoring at the next measurement.

The miniature

The report in miniature.

This miniature shows in advance which result formats this report uses. It is calculated from the sample values on this page and is not a picture. Each mark stands for a format that reappears at full size further down — and whatever this panel does not use is missing here as well.

  1. 1

    The traffic light 1–9

Every evaluation sits as a mark on the same traffic light 1–9. Red on the left, green on the right, higher is more favourable. How the marks spread across the band shows directly whether this panel sits more towards the red, amber or green range.

  2. 2

    Biological against chronological

The dashed line is the calendar age, the dot the biological age for each marker. The distance between the two is what the report states — not the single figure in years.

  3. 3

    Two measurements compared

Two measurements of the same value side by side: the open dot is the first, the filled one the second. Only what can actually change is compared — genetic variants stay the same. The interval between two measurements is set by the supervising institution.

Important notices

Sample report
All values and personal details in this document are fictitious and serve solely to illustrate the report format. This is not a real report.
Interpretation
The biological age reported here is a model value derived from three microRNA signals. The underlying model has been published as a pilot study; its mean absolute error is around ten years. The value is not an age determination, not a diagnosis and not a statement about life expectancy or disease risk. Informative value only emerges across several measurements under the same conditions. A comparison with methylation-based age clocks is not permissible.
Status of the analyses
The analyses are laboratory services provided by our cooperation partner and are not CE-marked in vitro diagnostic devices. They serve consultation and monitoring and do not replace clinical diagnostics. The analyses are supplied to professional users only.
Legal framework
This panel evaluates no genotypes; it measures epigenetic markers. Where an analysis in the portfolio does include genetic testing, information and written consent are required before sample collection, and it may only be arranged under medical responsibility (German Genetic Diagnostics Act). The laboratory analysis is carried out by our cooperation partner. Polaris Diagnostics Europe GmbH is responsible for distribution and support. Please review food supplements individually and in consultation with a qualified professional. This document does not constitute any promise of cure within the meaning of the German Therapeutic Products Advertising Act (HWG).

How reliable is this figure?

The underlying model has been published as a pilot study (n = 539). It explains around 5% of the variance in age, the mean absolute error is 10.4 years, and two of the three microRNAs did not correlate significantly with chronological age in that work. The authors themselves call for validation before clinical use.

  • What this means in practice: the biological age reported here is not an age determination and says nothing about life expectancy or disease risk. What carries meaning is the change between two measurements under the same conditions — which is why this report centres on the trend and not on the single figure.
  • A comparison with methylation-based age clocks is not permissible: different methodology, different evidence base. Source: Schneider J. et al., miRNA-3Age, Frontiers in Nutrition 2025, doi:10.3389/fnut.2025.1659730.

How this becomes a consultation

A report is a programme, not a single value.

  1. 01

    Before the consultation

The full report is available ahead of the appointment. Read it through and mark what stands out: the traffic-light ratings, their distribution across the evaluations, the starting points named. That way it is clear from the outset what to discuss.

  2. 02

    During the consultation

All three values in this panel sit on the epigenetic level. Unlike genetic variants, which are determined once in a lifetime and remain unchanged, this level responds to nutrition, exercise, sleep and strain — it alone is suitable for tracking progress. The conversation therefore separates what is fixed from what can be worked on.

  3. 03

    Afterwards

The interval to a follow-up measurement is set by the supervising institution. Laboratory, sample material and sampling should stay the same — and whatever happens in between belongs in the same documentation as the values.

Your result

Your biological age clock.

+4 yearsDeviation from chronological age
+20 yrs+100−10−20 yrs

From the combined evaluation of miR-21, miR-24 and miR-155. Chronological age 48 years. Your biological age is 52 years, four years above your chronological age. The range from −5 to +5 years is regarded as age-appropriate — your value therefore lies within this range. For context: the reference band of ±5 years is narrower than the model's mean error of 10.4 years. A deviation of this magnitude therefore cannot be distinguished from the model's scatter.

The three microRNAs

3 values

Basis of the calculation

The individual signals on the traffic light 1–9; higher is better. Only their interplay produces the age clock — a single signal on its own does not permit any conclusion.

miR-21Inflammation and tissue remodelling

Lead microRNA of ‘inflammaging’. Rises with chronic, low-grade inflammation and is closely linked to senescence and fibrosis.

3 / 9Outside range
159

The weakest of your three signals. All eight recommendations in this report address the miR-21 pathway.

miR-155Immune balance and metabolism

Central switch of the immune response. Elevated levels accompany metabolic stress and overactive inflammatory regulation.

4 / 9Mid range
159

In the lower middle range. Together with miR-21, this signal points in the same direction: inflammation and immune regulation are the axis of this report.

miR-24Cell cycle and senescence

Regulates cell division, DNA repair and apoptosis. Reflects the repair capacity and senescence level of cells.

5 / 9Mid range
159

The strongest of your three signals — exactly in the middle of the scale. Repair capacity and senescence level are unremarkable.

Link to the age clock

  • Stress (4 out of 10) is your weakest lifestyle factor. In the model study, stress and smoking were among the factors associated with a higher miRNA age.
  • Tobacco (9 out of 10), by contrast, is well above average — so the second of the two factors that were unfavourable in the model does not apply to you.
  • Omega-3 (6) and exercise (7) have room for improvement; both are among the levers that were associated with a lower miRNA age in the study.

Assessment based on your self-reported information, not an individual diagnosis. The associations described come from the model study and are group findings, not a prediction for the individual case.

The actual finding

Trend

Because the single value does not overcome the model's scatter, the informative value of this analysis lies in the trend. Only measured values are shown — no forecast.

15.03.202615.06.2026
Biological age54 years52 years−2 years

Evaluation: initial measurement 15.03.2026, follow-up 15.06.2026, change −2 years, deviation today +4 compared with chronological age.

What the trend shows

Biological age has fallen by two years between the two measurements, from 54 to 52 — while chronological age rose by three months over the same period. The direction is right.

  • At the same time: a difference of two years lies well within the model's scatter of around ten years. A single step of this size does not yet demonstrate an effect — only a direction that stays consistent across several measurements does that.
  • The two measurements were around three months apart. The interval to the next check is set by the institution providing your care; sample collection and time of day should remain comparable.

Summary

Your focus: the inflammation axis.

Two of your three signals — miR-21 (3/9) and miR-155 (4/9) — describe inflammation and immune regulation, and both lie in the lower range. miR-24, which reflects repair and senescence, sits in the middle at 5/9. This produces a clear picture of where to focus.

01

Eat an anti-inflammatory diet

All eight levers in this report act on miR-21, six of them additionally on miR-155. The overlap is manageable and practical for everyday life. Specifically: oily sea fish twice a week or algal oil daily, 3–4 cups of green tea, turmeric with black pepper, broccoli cooked for 3–4 minutes at 80 °C, berries for resveratrol.

02

Stress and physical activity

Your lifestyle radar shows stress at 4 out of 10 as the weakest factor, with exercise at 7 and omega-3 at 6 leaving room for improvement. In the model study, stress and smoking were associated with a higher miRNA age, while regular physical activity and fish were associated with a lower one. Physical activity is the only lever that targets all three signals at once: at least 150 minutes per week, endurance and strength combined.

What is already working

Not smoking (tobacco 9/10), fruit and vegetables (8/10) and fluid intake (8/10) are well above the reference group. The nutrition score of 72/100 is solid as well. And the trend is pointing in the right direction.

Please keep in mind

  • All the associations described between lifestyle and miRNA age come from the model study and are group findings. Whether your personal value changes as a result of these measures can only be shown by your next measurement.
  • This report is not a diagnosis and does not replace medical advice.

What the analysis is suitable for

As a consultation and monitoring tool: it creates a concrete occasion, makes lifestyle topics tangible and, through repeated measurements under the same conditions, provides a trend line.

What it is not suitable for

As an age determination, as a statement about life expectancy or disease risk, as diagnostics — and as a basis for comparison with methylation-based age clocks, which rest on a different methodology and a different evidence base.

Schneider J. et al., miRNA-3Age: a microRNA-based biological age model and its modulation by lifestyle and nutrition. Frontiers in Nutrition (2025), doi:10.3389/fnut.2025.1659730

The guiding principle

The trend carries the meaning, the single value does not. An initial and a follow-up measurement under the same conditions are the real benefit of this analysis.

  • A single value within ±10 years of chronological age cannot be distinguished from the model's scatter.
